Taken in an old Charleston home.
I believe this is a ‘Virginal’, a keyboard instrument popular in the 16th and 17th century though this is a newer one perhaps early 1800’s.

The strings are single (not double like a piano) and run parallel with the box. Tone is different because of this.
Early version, 16th century, did not have legs or a built in stand.
This one was made in London and a new patent had been applied for… I could read the label, not that smart. Restoration was done at some point since newer hinges and keyboard cover looked modern.
