These are big birds, up to 30 pounds (14 kg).

I think because the look so compact their size is deceiving.

They breed inland and spend the winter months on the coast line for the open waters.

These shots were taken on the Florida gulf coast. A little further north the birds move into the marshes rather than salt water.
