Little if any of today’s craftsmanship compares to what was done in the past. Money is a big part but also development of talent and artistic imagination.
This house was designed by a little known architect. That’s amazing by itself. Being from NE I didn’t know that Charleston was the hub of wealth in the early 1800’s. The plantation owners and slave traders (this was owner by a slave trader) spent their money on ways to show off to the others. The third floor, top of these stairs is all gold inlay carvings.
