Precision Formations, Pelican

Precision Formations, Pelican

Almost like a military air show. They can fly in perfect formation.

Never once do they come close to touching each other.

They turn, even dive together as a unit.

You can’t not wonder how they do it.

    1. Thank you. It’s the sky that can make the photos look that way. I have found on the southern US coast (ocean breeze, clear air) the blue, clouds, etc. can look almost too perfect. My wife and I call these ‘big sky’ days. Some images actually need to have the blue toned down.

Sky here can be just ‘breath taking’.

  1. The trio of pelicans is amazing and they formed a beautiful triangle. Outstanding photographs!!!
Ted, may I ask you a question. Do you use a tripod when you take photos of birds in flight?

    1. Thank you very much. As for tripod…never, monopod…never. Not for in flight photographs. There are some people that do use a tripod with a big gimbal head.

When following a fast subject you need to be flexible and be able to ‘swing around’ free. If you photograph a bird in fight at a far distance you might use one, but you have to crop the image so much it’s not good anyway.

I use a monopod on occasion, when shooting a far distance or a windy day. If something is fast moving 90% of the time the monopod prohibits the shot.

Long answer to short question LOL.

    2. Ted, thank you very, very much for answering my question. I don’t have a tripod or monopod but when I am looking at your photos of birds in flight they are so sharp, so clean and without noise. I miss so many interesting flight shots. If I am lucky they come OK but often they are blurry or I cut birds wings or heads, or they hit the frame.

    1. Thanks so much. And thanks for visiting. Please dig around, or search for a favorite subject. I think I may have hit about 7,000 pages here. 😀. I obviously am a compulsive nature photographer…I may have a problem. 😂😂😂😂

  2. Great shots – wonderful, arent they?! We were just in Costa Rica and enjoyed watching the morning aerobatics of the Pelicans on the Pacific coast, diving and swooping and diving again and again 😊
