Simonds Sarcophagus 1889

Simonds Sarcophagus 1889

Andrew and Sarah Calhoun Simonds memorial.

Andrew Simonds was a wealthy business man and banker both before and after the Civil War. Sarah was a descendant of John C. Calhoun, US Vice President, Secretary Of State, and an avid supporter of southern states rights, and slavery.

This is an extravagant burial site, even by wealthy Charleston standards.

This style is not something I would usually photograph, but here it stands out from everything. Which is obviously what it was designed to do.
