Fox Squirrel, Southern Variation

I had never even heard of one until until seeing a little ‘panda’ looking thing run by in a pine forest. They are the biggest Squirrel in North America.

There are actually three variations of the Fox, the southern one is the most distinctive.

This Fox lives in Pine forests, swamps, and marshes. That pretty much describes the Lowcountry.

Unlike other Squirrels this one is shy and keeps away from people, no hand feeding peanuts to him.

The Fox in these shots may be the only one I have ever seen stay around like this.

  1. That is a completely new species for me. It does not look so neat as its colleagues to me. With such a tail, a fox must indeed have been involved …

    1. This first time I saw one I did a double take. I only just learned of the three different types. And they live in the exact environment here that I found written up in the research I did.
