You know their hide is tough when they lay on top of a Fire Ant nest.
That pile of fresh dirt off to the left of his head is part of the Fire Ant nest.
And yes, they bite like fire. Better yet, they swarm first, then they all bite. Moving here means a ‘right of passage’ with these critters.
As you can see from the above, they don’t even bother with these locals.

Hubby had his first encounter with fire ants several weeks ago in SC, oh my goodness, he had over a dozen bites on his ankles. They were so infected looking, I worried we were going to have to call a doctor. He still has scars and slight itching!
