The Armadillo are part of the same family with the anteaters and sloths. Their front claws prove the point.
No one who moves here expects to find an Armadillo. When you do see one in the wild, the next surprise, they can come right up close to you. Bad eyes and sense of smell. But they are quick.
We came across this one on a dirt road.
I took plenty of photographs (big surprise) since most people never see one. There is something fascinating about them.

Bad vision and hearing, but when they are spooked… look out. They jump, high. They squeal, loud. Photographers have been known to jump and squeal right along side them. LOL
