A surprise find yesterday. In the Lowcountry you need to be in a Cypress swamp area to see them. We were out in an area of rice fields, but some swamp areas were along the edge.
Nesting is usually done in hollowed Cypress Knees or at least a dead tree over water.
Prothonotary’s are from the West Indies, Central America and northern South America. They will come north to breed and actually can go up to colder areas at times.
They are fast and small so with my patience I get few photographs each year. I do work some for these birds though.
