Red-tailed Hawk, An Old Friend

Red-tailed Hawk, An Old Friend

Friend is a bit of a stretch, I have been photographing her for about 5 years. Never touched her, never will.

She was hit by a car and saved by the Avian Conservation Center. However she lost an eye and can never hunt in the wild again.

Above, you can see she still has the will and ability to ‘almost hunt’.

She flew across an open field and caught her prey (a small piece of meat) on a stump post.

During flight she tilts her head at an angle to see the prey. You can see she is pretty good at this.

We visited the center the other day while they gave family groups demonstrations and raptor education. The kids loved it.

She is fitted with standard falconry jesses (leg straps) and a radio transmitter. Whenever birds are flown and loose here they have the RT attached. Some like to take excursions since they love to fly. They come back, but it may take a while before they get hungry.
