Juvenile American Kestrel

Juvenile American Kestrel

This is the smallest falcon in North America. Also called the Sparrow Hawk for his small size. They are also considered the prettiest (I have a metal print of one hanging in my office, I’m bias).

‘The American Kestrel  is the smallest and most common falcon in North America. It has a roughly two-to-one range in size over subspecies and sex, varying in size from about the weight of a blue jay to a mourning dove.’  (Wikipedia)

Kestrels like to sit on fence lines by open fields. Most of the photos we get are taken there.

Like all Falcons… don’t get too close.

    1. I have seen Kestrels only a few times in my local area and never in good light. I am in awe of the detail and colors in your image, Ted.
