A day when Green Herons were out, and not too shy.
Above, this is a habit I have never seen in other birds. Flicking his tongue out, licking his bill. It’s common in these small Herons
I stayed in one place and this Green Heron poked all around, completely ignoring me.
Great shots, Ted. I have always felt that Green Herons have more personality than other herons and you show that off really well. I especially love the shot with the Mohawk look as the heron was scratching an itch.
Thanks. We always look for them. And yes, more personality. 👍. In flight Bitterns look very similar. But who ever gets to really see Bitterns, so I always assume Green Heron. Of course today we found at least 6 Bitterns…well Bittern bird butts.
Now that you point out this tongue behavior, I realize how often I’ve also seen it, but was never quite sure what the heron was doing – thanks!
I’ve never seen another bird do that. The first few times I thought it was just good timing or something. But now I have photographed them numerous times over the years. 😂😂😂.
I always like to look at your photos of Green Herons. It’s fascinating how the Heron is exploring the marsh.
Thank you. I was glad to catch him ‘licking his lips’ in the first shot. I’ve photographed them doing that over the years, weird trait.
