His head popped up, hanging onto a nice size fish. I had no idea he was swimming nearby.
Unlike other diving birds Anhinga use their sharp bill like a spear.
Like all these birds the fish is head first to avoid sharp gills.
This time the bird has him perfectly positioned… and it was gone in a flash.
Nice reaction, Ted. I know how hard it is to get shots when a bird pops up unexpectedly like that.
Thanks. The light was horrible, but the scene made it a keeper LOL.
Occasionally one of your birds makes its way into Northern Virginia, but so far no Anhingas. 🙂
They leave here for South America each fall. Even we are too cold for them LOL.
Just read one of my critters made it up north. A Spoonbill is out on Long Island. You might get that Anhinga yet 😂😂
At a local park here in Northern Virginia, there are currently a couple of Roseate Spoonbills, a Little Blue Heron, and a Tri-colored Heron, all unusual for this area. (The park has a boardwalk and is usually really crowded, so I have not seen “your” birds.)
Such a great capture
Thank you, and thanks for stopping by. Please dig around when you have time. We have thousands of pages and images here. 😃
sure😊
Great series, Ted!!
Thanks. It has occurred to me I didn’t catch as many like this during the spring. Less Anhinga in the swamps.
Less Anhinga, Spoonbills in NY. Weather just reeking havoc.
