Rough Green Snake

Rough Green Snake

A photograph taken late November and promptly forgotten.

I’m not sure how I could have missed this. Look at how bright green he is… and an orange tongue!

This is a Rough Green Snake, found in a local swamp. There is also a Smooth Green Snake in the northeast.

Finally a name that is easy and descriptive.

  1. Interesting to see this delightful green snake, Ted. Great photo. Makes me think I should post a picture of the Pygmy Rattlesnake I took a month or so ago… It was quite a shock when I realized what it was!

    1. Ahhhh, the little Pygmy guy. Also called the Carolina Rattlesnake. Small in stature, mighty in attitude. I have had a few close encounters. I had no idea what it was the first time either 😂😂

    2. It looked so much smaller than the large snake that slithered by the day before, which I’m pretty sure was a cottonmouth. I just stood there taking its picture as it slid away right next to me! Little did I know!!😳

    3. I knew LOL. My first experience with one was trying to chase it back into the woods. The dog found it by the house. I thought the pattern close to a rattler. But yes, so small.

Until he curled up, rattle started shaking and struck 3 times. Missed me but the stick I was pushing him with got it. I found out later they are particularly nasty little guys.
