Each year it’s a turning point when the Egrets start to nest. The larger Herons are first, then the Great Egrets. The species do not coexist very well.
I spotted my first Egret with materials heading for a rookery island.
Egrets nest closer than Herons, and fight constantly. While they are beautiful birds they are also, like Great Blues, predators. Not a good mixture, particularly at the start of the year. Ultimately the Herons give up chasing Egrets and let them move in.
