The Woodpecker was almost stationary for some time. Ellen (PassingByPhoto.com) was following him first, as usual.
Finally I couldn’t stand it and had to shoot a few too.

These were taken about 2 weeks ago, near the local Great Blue rookery. We’ve been busy and I tend to pay more attention to the bigger critters pushing these images back a bit.

Charleston, South Carolina.
Note; probably wrong ID here. Downy seems more likely... in hindsight of course.
Love how he turns his head to get just the right angle.
He was working it. I’m wondering if this was a Downy not Hairy now.
I think Downy is right, when you compare his bill to his head. ☺️
This is my go to reference on that: https://www.audubon.org/news/how-tell-hairy-woodpecker-downy-woodpecker
I was lazy with my ID… corrected the article when I realized it. Thanks. We have been out pretty steady. We move around between down to Merrett and up to our local Lowcountry, next the delta. Can’t shoot and write at the same time LOL
Downy 👍😊 Another ID help between the two is the black dots along the tail at perch which the Hairy doesn’t have. I’ve had to sharpen my skills on these two to keep me straight. 😉
Thanks, I usually just go by size. Later I ask Ellen.
