Not yet time for any serious nesting for the smaller Herons. They are checking out their options though.
These were shot in a rookery that had gone barren a few years ago. The islands were built up and new swamp trees planted. In this case the birds returned after a few years.
The swamp land is in the center of Beaufort, South Carolina. It’s a medium size town near the coastal marshes where birds are always feeding, providing a decent chance the rookery would come back.
When a rookery goes dead the resident critters find a new place and usually stick with it. There are many reasons this happens and some are gone for no obvious reason.
