While not usually the case, Pelicans can get moving fast at times. Here this bird was heading away from me, I grabbed what I could but missed most shots.


I think in this group I only had these four photographs as keepers.
Shooting with the big lens I can still keep things in focus, just not in the center (or close) of the frame.


I have never seen a pelican in flight!
Graceful and elegant. Bow legged and clumsy on land, but magnificent in the air. The can catch a wind thermal and glide forever. There’s probably a few hundred photographs of them flying here. Amazing fliers once they manage to get wind under those big winds. Enjoy watching them sail a few feet above the water.
Oh yeah. Most of the recent Pelican shots have been at one of the small island rookeries here. The ones here are the largest on the coast. Hundreds flying low over the water, thousands of birds on the shore. Unfortunately breeding and tides mean you can get there only a few times during the year.
