I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a fish at the end of this dive, but it was a great opportunity to document how a Brown Pelican dives for fish.
This was so slow it was almost slow motion, probably because he was practically in the surf. Too fast and his head would be buried in the sand.
The Pelican made a nice slow descent dropping down slow and no indication of a small dive. Just a normal water landing look so far.
However suddenly he was leaning forward and turning his head to the right. Pelicans protect their head and throats when hitting the water in this action.
Finally a ‘half-hearted’ splash down.
This was probably practice more than anything else. Still a great slow example of a Brown Pelican dive.
