Colorful and a bird with all types of interesting behaviors. One big item is they eat oysters, and require plenty of them. By default the bird lives in clean waters because oysters clean water. Most environmental organizations use the presence of Oystercatchers as a bell weather for healthy waters.
Plenty of patience is needed for these birds to live oysters. Even with specialized beaks they must wait for the oyster to open, even a crack, before getting inside to feed.

I don’t think they survive by hiding, at least not very well. Above you can see there is nothing subtle about them.
