A Few Still Around, Little Blue

The breeding season is gone, however a few chicks were hatched late.

In the thick rookery brush young Herons and Egrets pop out to explore. These are the last of the year.

This particular spot only had Little Blue Heron chicks.

    1. I didn’t see them being fed, but adults were in the same general vicinity. They also will need ‘flight school’.

So; flight school (a made up local name) is done by the Little Blue adults. I’ve never seen another bird do it. Adults will carry food to the young, but keep a distance away. The chicks must retrieve it. The food is ultimately displayed to the young, the adult flying to a further branch, the babies fly over without a single thought about being in the air. Finally adults fly away with food, followed by a group of small white babies.

Incredible to see. Also fun when you see that last chick run full speed down a branch…until they reach the end! One will always slam on the brakes and not fall off the edge.
