He was much too close for good wide shots, and of course I was in the wrong spot.


The Great Blue had dropped down on the railing of this ‘bridge to nowhere’. It’s a short span to a small open spot over water. The far side is nowhere… thick vegetation and a favorite Alligator spot.

All I could do was turn and shoot at the shortest my lens would go. Which was not short enough.

This was ‘the spot’ for Great Blues the other day.
Amazing these large lanky birds can be so graceful in the air.
Absolutely. Each spring we have a Great Blue rookery in a nearby swamp. We stand for hours watching them.
