This is a Yellow-crowned Night Heron hunting in a salt marsh. He was a little further than I would have liked however there was no place else to get anything better. Mud and marsh.

When the tide is low the flats are filled with small ‘Fiddler Crabs’.

The birds get covered in mud while catching them. It’s the price for having an easy crab meal.

That crab is fighting back. GREAT SHOT Ted.
π,for a moment. Thanks.
Amazing photos!!
Thank you. I felt it was a bit far for this type of shot. However short of crawling down the dike and wading in that marsh it was my best option.
I liked the water surrounding the heron, a sense of peace during a meal.
As he swallows a crab whole π
