We find Nine-banded Armadillo on the edge of pine forests, the wood line. It must be the best place to go ‘head down, nose deep, and push through’ for food.

Almost always they have no idea we are even standing there.

If you want a decent shot it takes as much patience as shooting the small birds. They keep their face down, in the ground as they walk.

Only for a brief moment will they look up and around. Now, when they are looking around they see very little. However, they will hear the camera shutter.

Once you are discovered these guys can move surprisingly fast. At that time you may need to be fast too. They might run in any random direction, even right at you.
Armadillo, one of natures true mysteries.
They are such interesting looking critters. I guess their quick movements and “armour” keep them safe? Nice shots!
It doesn’t hurt that each female has exactly 4 young every year. The 4 are always the same sex, clones actually. Keeps their numbers up.
Thanks for sharing these, Ted, pretty neat critter!
We go for weeks without seeing one, then they are wandering all over. LOL.
