I took these shots from behind a few Cypress Trees on a swamp trail. This Heron was patrolling the edge of the water near the nest trees.


I never did see him even try to catch anything. Maybe he was just exercising after standing on his nest site all day. He may be one of the last single males in the rookery.

There has been some digging with backhoes very nearby but the nesting has continued. The owners of this swamp are cleaning out an old abandon rookery swamp in hopes of expanding this rookery. Currently the big trees here are slowly aging, and falling. New open areas should replace the old over time.
