Cypress Wetlands Alligator

Cypress Wetlands Alligator

Port Royal, South Carolina, has a wetlands in the center of town. It’s a decent size, a few islands in the middle. but not very deep. They have built up the islands over time to allow small wading birds to nest there, a rookery. It has a boardwalk running along the side.

And since it is South Carolina the marsh has it’s fair share of these locals. They live in the center of town with everyone else.

I have never heard of one walking through town.

Another thought, a little funny. The US Marines have their basic training camp outside of Port Royal. Wonder what the young northern recruits think when they are out training…and bump into one of these. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

  1. Oh wow! I’m adding this place to my list for when we will visit the area in a few weeks! Coming from Canada, seeing aligators is still quite an experience for me πŸ™‚

    1. It’s typically out of the way for visitors, but a great spot if you are passing through. Don’t be shy about asking locals you meet where you might find a few. It’s a common question and everyone is happy to tell you. If you are near Charleston South Carolina I would be glad to provide a list.

    2. Thank you! Right now, we are planning to stay in the Savannah area, but might spent a day visiting Beaufort and Port Royal on the way back home. Charleston is definitely on our list, but this might be our next trip. So many beautiful places to visit πŸ™‚

    3. Savannah has the Bonaventure cemetery which is beautiful. Beaufort is a favorite of mine, and and a friend Coastal Expeditions in Charleston has a boat in Beaufort for sunset trips out in the bay there. The best way to spend an evening there. Port Royal, Cypress Wetlands will take care of the Alligators for you. Small but right in the center of town and easy to get to.
