These small Heron’s were photographed at the old Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston. Every year the tall Live Oaks here turn into a Night Heron rookery. Unlike the larger Herons these birds will nest in areas not surrounded by water.
I have found Night Herons nesting in parks right in the center of the Charleston tourist area. Once I even found them in the parking lot of a Connecticut Diner.

These two birds stay along the pond in the middle of the cemetery. The Charleston Harbor salt marshes are in the cemetery too. They have no problem hunting and fishing here.

For me a good Night Heron shot means I have captured their ruby red eyes. All three images caught the deep ruby red color 😁.
