Anhinga are unique, for sure. A true tropical bird, we are at the edge of their range. The name Anhinga means ‘snake bird, devil bird’ in the native Brazilian Tupi language.

Adorable, but don’t get close 😂. One of the more aggressive residents in the swamps. They are very impressive and resilient. A South American (Amazon Jungle) bird that made its way to the southern US, and stayed.
You found a perfect setting for the Anhinga. I always like their wing coloring, but the fall colors give a nice pop.
This was a heron nest from last year. A good spot close to a trail.
