Leaving The Nest, Great Blue

The series a always try to catch, one of the big Herons leaving the nest.

I have called it the ‘leap of faith’ in the past.

The Great Blue stands on the edge of the nest site, and with no hesitation jumps into the air.

Down below is a swamp, water, and Alligators. And they just lean forward and jump.

Flying In Formation, Pelican

When asked, or talking about the use of a monopod I always stress they are not for birds in flight. Actually not for any moving subject. I need to move and follow the subject, not be planted to the ground.

That said, these were taken with a monopod, on a foggy morning. That’s make three strikes against these photographs;

  1. planted to the ground
  2. fog
  3. morning low light

I like these, maybe because of all the above. Still…

Always exceptions.

Mist On A Swamp

Cool nights and warming mornings have been giving us some great opportunities the last few weeks.

Best viewed large.

This is close to home, meaning sleep a little later.

A Great Blue Heron sits in a nest looking over the swamp, both Blue-winged and Green-winged Teals swim underneath.

Not a bad way to start the day.

I have been creating monochrome nature photographs more often. Not wanting plain flat 1950’s ‘developed in the candy store’ looks either I am using more imaging software to get traditional film looks.
