Wood Duck

There had been a good number of Wood Ducks around this swamp. A few had large broods, swimming around with a dozen little ones trailing behind.

This single female is the only one still around. Probably a bunch has moved out to the marshes like the other birds.

Wood Ducks are the most common duck in South Carolina.

The Exit, Great Blue Heron

He was much too close for good wide shots, and of course I was in the wrong spot.

The Great Blue had dropped down on the railing of this ‘bridge to nowhere’. It’s a short span to a small open spot over water. TheĀ  far side is nowhere… thick vegetation and a favorite Alligator spot.

All I could do was turn and shoot at the shortest my lens would go. Which was not short enough.

Came Home For Food, Great Egret

Hard to tell if he actually did get fed, I assume so. Other wise why come back… he’s a bird not a teenager.

I’ve got to believe this is the last Great Egret youngster for the year.

At least he doesn’t bring laundry too.

Great Egret In An Oyster Bed

When the tide is low the coastal oyster beds are a good fishing spot for the local wading birds. Our timing was good as we stood around watching the birds work the shallows.

I think this was shot right after I unpacked and setup the gear. I had the full pack since we shooting on the shore, everything is in pieces so I was lucky to be ready.

This Egret didn’t stand here long after the catch. Gulls and other Egrets had taken notice meaning an attempted steal was about to happen.

He got off with the prize.
