Getting light behind a subject, backlighting, can make some interesting looks.
Other times you will struggle to get the details.
I would call this a struggle that some how worked.
I took at least 40 different shots here. Publishing this one only.

This was the second Black-crowned Night Heron I photographed over the same small stretch of a salt marsh.
The other bird was in a better spot, but this isn’t a photo studio. You work with what you have been given.
Usually these Black-crowned Night Herons give little time for set up. More of a run and gun type of shot needed.
This one sat still and posed. I had all the time in the world.
This might be my new favorite Night Heron photograph.
The water was a green goop but these Herons don’t care. As long as they can find something swimming around.
This juvenile has just started to turn to his adult coloring. It will not be this year though.
This swamp spot is half way between a rookery and open marshes. Best of both worlds for hunting.
Great Blue Heron in flight over a marsh.
One of those photographs you try to capture without thinking. These big birds are striking and catching a fly by is most always a good shot. Unless the photographer screws it up LOL.
From one of those fortunate accidents. Neither of us expected or wanted to be this close. The pond trail doesn’t give too many options though, not if you both are walking it at the same time.
Great Blue Heron.
Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron.
This dead branch was over marsh waters giving me a great background.
He also sat there like a statue. I had one pose to work with.
Feedings like this are a photographers dream. Almost every species that is out in these marshes all together in a single gathering.
However it’s very easy to ruin these shots. With this many subjects I can spin in circles for a minute or two trying to get everything at the same time.
Been there, done that.
