A cold glass bottle on a hot sunny day is like a time machine.

Not much has changed since my last walk through this Main Street. I believe it was around 2 years ago.
We can’t blame this on the Pandemic economy. It was exactly like this before Covid.
Outside of these towns the strip malls, some shopping centers, are filled, a few thrive.
I shoot in B&W for drama, so that needs to be considered when viewing images like these. However it doesn’t change the fact Main Street is broken.
Every town and city in America had one at some point.
The tiled entrance is pure Americana.
In NYC every small store had this type of entrance. Tenements built in the late 1800’s used these tiles in hallways, bathrooms, about any place they could. I grew up with them.
I actually found tiled entrances in an old ‘gold rush’ town ruins in Arizona.
Charleston, South Carolina.
I love the designs of this old store. A pretty good Art Deco design. Especially considering it’s in a true small ‘Main Street USA’.
It’s an old, and long time closed, small town department store. The type that served rural middle America in the 1940’s – 1960’s.
Sooner or later it will be torn down. That’s a shame since it’s rare to find a building with character now.
On the other end of this ‘Main Street’ a second smaller version, by the same store, is still standing.
Every once in a while we pass through here, I try to stop for a few more images. Some time I’ll look and find an empty spot.
Walterboro, South Carolina.
