As usual it started out with the ‘sneaky sprint’ move.

Professional Thief

It’s always great to watch a professional at work. The skill is always impressive.

A little ways off a Roseate Spoonbill had landed on a sand bar. The ‘rock star’ drew a crowd of bike riders traveling by.

And so the thief moved in. Not drawing any attention, but in plain sight too.

I of course, in true journalist tradition, documented the crime and moved off keeping my source ID private.

Sandwich Tern, I Think (Nope Forster’s Tern)

We have a few different types of Terns on the South Carolina coast. Of course they all have a similar head marking. This bird doesn’t seem to fit though.

Note; BayPhotosByDonna cleared this up, a Forster’s Tern. See comments.

My best guess, a Sandwich Tern. This is not part of their usual habitat range though.

The black bill still points to a Sandwich…best I can tell.

Shore birds are the hardest for me to ID.

I do know it’s not a Flamingo.

This Heron finally pulled loose part of the bottom in this really low tide. He worked hard and took it time but now he had it. Big question was what did he have.

Not Without A Fight (1)

A long battle in a very low inlet.  It was a low tide to begin with, and then a heavy wind pushed the water back even more.

Note; this article is in two parts due to the large number of photographs needed to cover the series.

This Great Blue Heron was sure he found something deep in the thick exposed bottom vegetation.

Whatever it was would not let go.

This Heron pulled, tried to take flight, even twist around sideways. Nothing seemed to work.

Until a patch finally let loose.
