Two Flocks Meet, Pelicans

A wide shot of the surf, and a near collision.

Best viewed large, it’s wide and at sunrise.

Above two different flocks of Brown Pelican met while riding the wind and waves.

Pelican on the right were following wind coming to shore, birds from that direction used those currents all morning. The left side had a group gliding just over the surf.

At the bottom a Gull watched them all go by.

Not my usual work, but not my usual opportunity either.

Just Passing Through, Great Blue Heron

Taken from a spot, in a marsh, where I had a wide expanse of open water. Typically there are at least a few tall reeds or branches to break up a long series.

Here I was wide open. So much so this might even look like an ocean shot.

However (below) sooner or later some marsh background would sneak in.

Marsh Scene

Looking out over a marsh with a few locals in the shot.

The old tree has an Anhinga on a branch. The white Great Egret is easy to spot. And of course, a little in front of the Egret an Alligator floats around.

A nice pretty, and common, scene we enjoy often.

ACE Basin, South Carolina.

Spoonbill, Last Minute Detour

My initial response to a Roseate Spoonbill coming into the marsh is for a closeup shot. So glad I didn’t try that here.

The fall reeds and grasses made for a great back drop.

Also, the young bird was getting old enough to have the trademark ‘pink’.

Suddenly this Spoonbill changed his mind about the landing spot.

A quick turn and it was off to the far side and open water.

He certainly gave me a few good opportunities though.

Ducks Were Flushed

This is what happens where Bald Eagles fly over.

Most of the birds were Blue-winged Teals, a few might have been Black Ducks.

The grass erupted with maybe 200 birds. The Eagle was not even all that close either. But I’ve seen this before. They take no chances.
