Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hartford Connecticut

The Soldiers and Sailors memorial was the first large memorial arch in America. It was dedicated in 1886 to the Hartford citizens who fought and died in the Civil war.

The arch leads into Hartford’s Bushnell park, however the entrance was quite different when first built. The Park river ran through the center of Hartford and a beautiful brownstone bridge lead up to the arch. The bridge was in the same design as the memorial.

The Park river was buried in 1940 to help with the spring floods and now runs through a large conduit ending in the Connecticut river.

The memorial, and the old bridge,  were built using brownstone brought up the Connecticut river from the quarries just down river in the town of Portland.

A side note, the ashes of the designer George Keller and his wife are in one of the towers.

American Icon

John Deere, and that distinct lettering, is an american icon.

These shots, done in monochrome, are of an old John Deere tractor in the back field of a Maine farm. This tractor is far from new, rusting, and has rope or baling wire to help it along. Yet come haying time it will fire up and work through the fields like it has for countless other seasons.

I have had these photographs for a while now but have been unsure just how I wanted to develop them. Finally black and white processing since it seems proper. It presents the John Deere just as it is right now, waiting in that back field.

Great Blue Heron Watching

These shots were taken after this Heron had been ‘Run Out Of Town‘  by a Red Winged Black Bird. He literally shook it off and then went fishing.

What I did not know, until processing these shots later, was a small Mallard had slept through the whole thing.

Life on the pond must be one drama after another.

I have not included any of the dozens of teen aged Canadian Geese that live there. The noise and chaos from them is even too much for me. Photographing them is like herding cats.
