All about low light and shadows.
Big White Pelican too.
Probably the first time I have photographed one. Being a ‘small bird’ the ID came from Merlin on-line and a few books we have.
A cantilevered spiral staircase in a Charleston manor house.
This is free standing, three story, and built in 1808.
These are big birds, up to 30 pounds (14 kg).
I think because the look so compact their size is deceiving.
They breed inland and spend the winter months on the coast line for the open waters.
These shots were taken on the Florida gulf coast. A little further north the birds move into the marshes rather than salt water.
Image if you could plan this out in advance.
Shoot this whenever you wanted.
I don’t know how I did it the first time.
An unusual style of fishing for a Reddish. Slow and methodical.
Makes you wonder if they just wear themselves out by days end.
We wanted a day without any swamps or marshes. We could shoot different methods, and gear.
I used a smaller camera, Canon 70D, and a few lighter lens, mostly primes. I set the camera to monochrome so I would only see results in black and white.
I even had ‘real people type’ shoes on.
We did have a few stops in mind but as always worked the side streets. All the old buildings make for much more interesting photographs.
Below we cut through one of the many alleys in the French Quarter. An Italian Hero (Sub, Hoagie, whatever regional name) was calling me, a short cut was needed.
If you are a New Yorker, or any Northeast Yankee, hit the Brown Dog Cafe. It may be the only real Hero sandwich in the south.
