Heading Out, Cape Romain
Morning quick shot at Cape Romain, South Carolina. On our way to a barrier island, 7/24/2022.
‘Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, extending 22 miles along the South Carolina Coast, is a rich mosaic of barrier islands with forest and ponds, vast salt marshes and intricate waterways. This diverse and dynamic system supports over 293 bird species and a myriad of other wildlife. Over fifty percent of refuge lands are designated a Class I National Wilderness Area.’ (from the US Fish and Wildlife web site)
FYI here; a Class 1 ‘national wilderness’ area is extremely rare. Only a handful of locations meet the criteria. In short it’s a no people, no access, no touch by human hands, area. The official description is; The most intact, undisturbed wild natural areas left on our planet. There are 760 locations, most are in Alaska, USA.

Ghost Signs
My fascination with these ‘ghost signs’ started with an old Mail Pouch chewing tobacco sign painted on a barn. A perfect example of an old art form. Every time I drove to visit my parents I passed through Layton, New Jersey (water gap) and it was right there.
The sign was there so long years later they changed the name of the town, now Peters Valley, and it was still on the road.
Many ghost signs from the 1890s to 1960s are still visible, they were most commonly used in the decades before the Great Depression.
Ghost signs were originally painted with oil-based house paints. The painters of the signs were called “wall dogs”. Some signs remain because that old paint also had lead and it strongly adhered to the masonry surface.
These photographs were taken in and around Ashville, North Carolina. Philadelphia, PA , Detroit, MI, and Richmond, Virginia are places with known pockets of these signs.

Of course my delivery person would very quickly stop coming by. There looks to be no way to easily open the door.
Still a creative work of art for sure.
