Yeah, That’s Just A Log, Alligator

As we pulled into the dirt road I glanced towards the old rice fields and said “Oh, that’s just a log”. I ignored it and got out of the car. Funny…the tree had no branches.

Second glance showed it had eyes and a tail. However, still the size of a tree.

Step on the dike, and look down…

Obviously not a tree.

This was one of the biggest, laying and watching the silly humans scurry around.

I walked far enough away to see if the grasses would give some perspective to his size. A little help but it would have been better if he was next to a car, or van. He was that big.

Looking down the long field, main entrance, to the manor house. Once this building was attached to another similar building. Like many of the plantations it was burned during the US civil war.

Prior to the civil war this stretch of land, along the marsh and river had multiple huge rice plantations and may have been the wealthiest part of the US.

Old stables and barns here still have large work horses.

Big Ole Alligator Relaxing

i couldn’t pass up taking a shot of this big guy stretched out on the platform. He is pretty big and took over the biggest place to sleep out there.

When we crossed the tracks here we found abandon gas stations. Not unheard of.

It was interesting that the empty gas stations were directly across the street from each other.

At some point there must have been enough traffic to support them. Now, both are empty, as well as the street.

Does a series like this make you uncomfortable? My style certainly doesn’t help. But when I take these photographs I am certainly focused on the ‘rust and ruin’.

Christmas lights in July, wide streets with no cars, and people gone.

It’s usually never as bleak as the black and white photograph can portray it. I admit to slanting my B&W images that way. It’s the medium and how I like to use it.

Of course there are locations that a soft color shot is just as effective.
