Spoonbills Moving Around

This may have been one of the best years in a long time for the Spoonbill population. Being a tropical bird it’s expected they are on the South Carolina coast. And there have been plenty.

They have been seen recently in locations here, inland, where none have been for years.

However, the young this year are looking for new food sources. They have been seen in Iowa (no ocean anywhere there!), and even up in Maine.

These travelers need to start back to the warm weather now but it does mean a larger geographic area for future generations may be happening.

And really, the world needs to see these beautiful birds.

Beach People

I stepped outside my comfort zone here. Way out. On a public beach, with people.

People from out of town rent their comfort and watch the shrimpers work. An occasional Pelican or Dolphin will send ‘ohhhs and ahhhs’ from the audience.

For people who have never seen Rockaway Beach or Jones Beach in NYC this place is empty.

A Wave, Start To Finish

I know some photographers who are great at this type of work and make a point of shooting the Charleston events. Me, this is the first time I have tried and really just for fun and practice.

I picked a good time since the tide was going out, waves were getting smaller I noticed. Which was fine, I had to figure out what a good wave looked like coming in from my spot.

I was shooting from above which helped me get these angles and be almost parallel at times.

Oh, I was leaning over a long pier to get this perspective. No helicopters or hover boards were harmed in this shoot.

Marsh Pier

This is something I never knew existed before moving here. Don’t know why, it makes perfect sense. A very, very, long pier into a marsh from your backyard.

Of course you need a hoist of some type to raise and lower a boat and other stuff. If the tide is right, just drop down and move on out into the ocean.

Gulf Fritillary, Passion Butterfly

I did not know this Butterfly is referred to as the “Passion Butterfly’.  I do not know much about any butterfly so of course I searched on line. Hence the Passion tidbit.

Their primary territory is Florida and Texas. Considering how many we have they must be like Maine Black Flies. Everywhere, in everything.

They can migrate as far as Central and South America. One document I read stated “they migrate north through Florida, and migrate south through Florida”. That was so enlightening I had to read it twice.

They also have the ability to emit a distinct and obvious odor which is composed of several different types of chemicals, such as 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one and hexadecyl acetate.

If this is not enough information on the Gulf Fritillary there is lots of information on the internet… even the mating ritual.

Good luck with that.
