A Pelican will fly low, almost touching the water to take advantage of the air flow. The best description is they ‘ride a cushion of air’.
A no effort glide using the weight of their body.

A Matte finish, just because.
I used the standard composition rules in a straight forward photograph. It makes a big difference.
A dirt road leads the viewers eye to the subject, the head stones are white and framed by the trees. All natural parts of the scene.
Last I lightened the center white head stones in the image.
From any other angle this was a pretty dull image.
White Pelicans I have been watching here look like they want to get high up right away. It only just occurred to me the other day, and watching this bird staying low seemed different.
Of course now that I’m curious the Pelicans will be gone and I will have forgotten my theory by the time I see my next flocks.
I have a curious mind…and a short attention span.
