Jail Cells, 1800’s

The Charleston Jail was opened in 1802 when the prisoners well being was not all that important.

The third floor in the image above held the prisoners considered dangerous. Each cell held men, women, and children in an area about 12×12.

A small coal fireplace in one corner provided some heat in the winter.

Each floor held a different type of prisoner. The first floor was for guards, supplies, and special people of Charleston society. Second floor was a debtors prison, third for long term inmates.

The only personal hygiene considerations was a communal bath on the first floor for the removal of lice.

Light and fresh air came from an air shaft center of the building.

The jail was shutdown in 1939.

From A Walk

So much history around here.

The headstones in the back were probably made in New England and shipped here. The carving, style, and stone, not to mention age suggest it.

Stones closer were locally made. Again different style, time, and rock.

If you look closely on the right stone you can see mention this person was from Sicily. Charleston was a wealthy port town with many immigrants. Half the port was French at one time.

Shot today, 9/17/2018, my first day out working in forever.

I usually only photograph Butterfly’s if I stumble on a decent opportunity.

I was hunting things to shoot today and not being very discriminating… or professional. My back is a little off so I carried a one size fits all lens and nothing else.

Long story short, I may be publishing a few (too many) Buttery articles.

The last of the scheduled Hurricane articles.

If we have not published anything new after this there’s a good chance I am treading water somewhere out in the Atlantic.

You can be sure I have a camera…

Note; Hurricane Florence has left the building.
