There were no big swirling and twisting passes this time. The bird did a fast back and forth and was gone.

Most times when they catch a fish you can actually see their head pulled back off the water.

I guess the small minnows were too deep here so the Skimmer moved on to a better spot. I did manage to catch these shots, which considering how few chances I had made me pretty happy.
What a cool bird. I especially love the way you composed the first image. It gives a sense of the background without cluttering the frame and the wonderful reflection is a nice bonus.
Unique is a good description. Skim the water with an open beak, snatch small fish on the fly. When they do catch a fish they almost flip over backwards. Love to find them.

Thanks. With luck I’ll find some when they flock and get ready to migrate. I think they go to South America. In the fall thousands gather at the remote beaches before they leave.
