Unlike other birds the Great Blue Heron will greet a returning mate, almost with affection. You can hear their calls from a long way off.


The birds communicate, touch each other, and settle down together.


Eventually the original Heron will leave, off to search for food. The remaining bird guards the nest.

At times they will actually wrap their necks around each other as a greeting.
