You Can Hear For Miles, Great Blue Calls

A unique sound, not what you would expect, but one you will not forget.

The call is deep and raspy, almost a long drawn out cough.

The Great Blue leans back and stands up tall.

Most calls are reserved for their mates. Early in the year calling out for them to return to a nest, and later when a mate needs the other to return.

When out photographing you will hear them from a long ways. For me the call tells me to walk a little faster, the Herons are on the move.

  1. That info about the heron’s calls is fascinating, Ted. The only time I hear herons make noise is when they loudly complain when I unintentionally spook them and they take to the air.

    1. 😂, that one I call the ‘croak’ LOL. I just came back from a rookery a few minutes ago and they were calling like crazy! Two Herons were in the same nesting tree, one staring into space. The other was calling, snapping his beak to make noise. He could not get the female to look his way no matter what 😂🤣😂🤣.
