Grebes, here a Pied-billed Grebe, really are built for speed. Their legs are placed very far back of the body (almost on the butt !), they also have lobed toes great for swimming and diving.

This Grebe was trying to beat a few others to a school of small minnows jumping on the surface. You can see how he parted the water, almost running.

The water was low here giving the feeding Grebes a fast and easy feast.
I love watching them zip across the water. They are so fun!
Strange critters, I have taken hundreds of shots of their diving butts ššš.
