This shot was taken during break time. Which they seem to have a lot of. Herons and Egrets seem to work with the same style.

The work is done in short frenzied bursts. The male flies to the banks of the swamp, close woods, or even tree tops. Sticks of any shape are grabbed and given to the female to place in some mysterious pattern. Look at the nest below, a pile of random sticks. Obviously repairs are ongoing.

The male repeats this as quickly as he can. At some point he flies off for more sticks, but just keeps going. You never when and with luck you managed some action photos before he slips off.

He does come back eventually, the female finally gets her chance to go fishing.

Above the male was up straight and looking around. Usually a sign he’s off again.
