A White Ibis captured with a different type of metering.

Spot metering for light on a white bird is a nice way to be sure the exposure catches the white bird details. Particularly important on Egrets and Ibis.

Using an OM System (previously Olympus) camera I now have three different spot metering options available. So of course I still use the tried and true standard ‘spot’. I have found a place for the others.

B&W photography often has a High Key, and Low Key process added. Low being heavy contrasts, High being very light/bright. The newer metering does some of the work for you.

Above is a ‘Low Key’ photo, the Ibis is still detailed in white, the surrounding area is dark contrasts, the low key.
