There is a short period of time when you can photograph both adults and young together on the nest.
As the juveniles get larger, so does the demand for food. At least one adult will always be out hunting.
Ultimately the young will be adult size, almost violent in their demand for food, adults will keep their distance only dropping off food.

As the get bigger they become real dinosaurs. Brutal to feed. They actually hurt the adults. This AM I shot two half grown herons getting fed. They fought with each other, grabbed the adult..just monsters. There were three chicks, one disappeared. Usually the smallest can’t fight for food and eventually falls out of the nest, which is bad here. The gators love it.
