I had watched, and followed, this Red-wing for a while earlier in the day. The red epaulets were bright and the bird dark which can make a great photo. However brush and sun made me move on.
I walked past the same brush later and now the sun was better and the bird in the clear. I had time for these before he went back to hiding.

Not many in the swamps here, the marsh area is best for me to find them.
Yes they like marshy areas — we see them in our prairie marshlands in spring to early fall. I hear them now in a park area nearby.
Ahhh, the Red-Winged – love to see their bright breeding red hues on their shoulders, although I do have a bone to pick with them after they attacked my head one day going into work – had some staples in the back thanks to a running accident and I don’t know if they just didn’t like me or they were attracted to the glint off the staples, but wow, one pecked me hard hahahaha.
They are pretty good at that.
