Most of the time my interaction with Black Skimmers is in the marshes. Surf fishing like they do is especially suited for creeks and marshes.
Getting to photograph these birds over the ocean is a completely new challenge. They are not any slower, however they do tend to twist and turn a lot less. Unless they are working the shore, then it’s back to the races LOL.

Taken off the shore of Crab Bank, South Carolina.
These are fantastic shots! Skimmers on the move are SO hard to photograph!
Being over the ocean they didn’t do the usual crazy turns. Later they did when skimming the surf 😂😂. However, it was raining and I was in a boat. So I’m pretty happy with these. Thanks so much.
If they did not have such a striking and colorful beak, they would probably be less noticeable, although they are graceful birds.
Fly like swallows. Fast and very acrobatic.
