Big Guy Making A Hole, Pileated Woodpecker

Big Guy Making A Hole, Pileated Woodpecker

I shot so many of this Woodpecker I just grabbed the first one that looked good. While testing a lens he started work again. Perfect timing.

This is my neighbor. A tree top broke off last year behind the house,  local Pileated almost immediately started working it.

I’m sure there will be more of him, this has the look of a nesting hole.

  1. What a stunning photo, Ted! We have a black woodpecker that looks like its twin – jet black with a red patch on the head. No crest like this one though… unless it was a hippie type, or simply overdue for a visit to the barber. One thing is certain: this is a magnificent shot I can only dream of. Over here they’re incredibly rare, and when you do spot one it lasts about half a second – just long enough to open your eyes before it’s gone. Top work, Ted!
