I shot so many of this Woodpecker I just grabbed the first one that looked good. While testing a lens he started work again. Perfect timing.
This is my neighbor. A tree top broke off last year behind the house, local Pileated almost immediately started working it.

I’m sure there will be more of him, this has the look of a nesting hole.
These birds are amazing. They are generally shy and hard to see around here but make Canada a year round home, sticking to boreal forest areas.
For the most part South Carolina woods are all big pine. Behind my house they are like 4-5 story buildings. Wood peckers love them. Of course the woods will eventually be cut… housing here is crazy.
I agree. Not been able to photograph one although others have. On walks with some better birders, they have heard and seen them. Me, not so lucky. Nice image, Ted.
I need to look through the shots from the other day, hope to have more. Unfortunately the big dead tree has few clear views, darn branches in the way. We can stand in the backyard but only one angle 😳.
What a stunning photo, Ted! We have a black woodpecker that looks like its twin – jet black with a red patch on the head. No crest like this one though… unless it was a hippie type, or simply overdue for a visit to the barber. One thing is certain: this is a magnificent shot I can only dream of. Over here they’re incredibly rare, and when you do spot one it lasts about half a second – just long enough to open your eyes before it’s gone. Top work, Ted!
Certainly a shy bird ! I went years up north just trying to get a good look at one. Huge bird. Another reason to love living here…
Thanks 😁😁😁
Great capture of a woodpecker. 😊
Thanks 😁. He/She is dedicated to making this hole large and deep.
Looking forward to when you revisit him!
Have new already. Problem is there’s only one spot with an open view. They all look the same no matter when they are taken LOL
